Holy Father John XXIII during the adoration of the Cross, on Holy Friday, in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (Rome). The pope is walking barefoot, while Masters of Ceremonies are holding the falda. Various sources confirm that the pope celebrated Holy Week ceremonies, at least once using the liturgical books from before the disastrous reform of Pius XII. However, it is difficult to confirm conclusively whether it applied to all celebrations during the Holy Week or just certain days or ceremonies. On the pictures it is shown that John XXIII at least twice gave reverence to the Cross in the way required by 1955 rubrics.
