Payetanimah, the chief of the Menominee tribe, made Archbishop Joseph Henry Schlarman, bishop of Peoria an honorary Indian chief, giving him the title Weeskiew Pimmaniwew, which means \u201cgood manager and bountiful dispenser of goods\u201d, October 15, 1951. The ceremony took place on the occasion of a Solemn Pontifical liturgy celebrated close to the place where, shortly before his death, the first public Mass in the present state of Illinois was celebrated by a Jesuit missionary, Fr. Jacques Marquette (1637-1675). The prelate, in an Indian headgear, is dressed in a summer cappa magna [the photo from The Museums of the Diocese of Peoria<\/a>].<\/p>\n
