Cicognani in USA

Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, Titular Archbishop of Laodicea in Phrygia and Apostolic Delegate to the United States of America (in the centre). The future cardinal is dressed in the solemn winter choir dress proper to his office: episcopal in colour, but made of watered silk. Unlike the cardinals surrounding him, who wear red shoes with gold buckles, he is wearing white pontifical sandals, indicating that the photograph was taken on the occasion of a solemn Mass celebrated by him. Visible in the photograph are two Asian cardinals, Valerian Gracias of India and Thomas Tien Ken-sin of China (first and second from the left), as well as four American cardinals: standing respectively to the right and left of Cicognani are Edward Mooney, Archbishop of Detroit, and Samuel Stritch of Chicago; farther to the right of the photograph are Francis Spellman of New York and James McIntyre, Metropolitan Archbishop of Los Angeles. All the members of the College are, of course, wearing cardinalitial choir dress, namely the cappa magna of watered silk with ermine shoulder capes.
