Pius XII at work

FILE PHOTO OF POPE PIUS XII

As T. Breza relates in his book on the Vatican of the last years of Pius XII’s pontificate, the pope at work was a completely different person than during audiences or in private: cold, but always with impeccable manners which sometimes embarrassed his collaborators. He could put a ladder against the bookshelf and take the volume he was searching for, explaining them: “You could have fallen.”
