Pius IX in his train
Pope Pius IX in a car of the private train made especially for him. The train was produced in 1858 in France. The first car, where the pope is standing, used to serve as the benediction loggia. The second one, partly visible in the photo, used to function as a throne room, whereas in the third car there was a chapel. Its interior was richly ornamented. On the walls, there were depictions of the twelve Apostles, Blessed Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus and the Good Shepherd.
