Trappist from Oka

Monks at Oka praying before Stations of the Cross

Monks praying in front of the Stations of the Cross in the Trappist Abbey of Notre-Dame du Lac, Oka, Quebec, the end of the 19th century [from: Digital History Project]. The monks came to Canada from the monastery of Bellefontaine in Bégrolles-en-Mauges, from which they had been expelled by the forces of the French Third Republic in 1880. At its peak, the abbey was home to more than 200 monks.
