Abp Checa y Barba
A posthumous photo of Archbishop José Ignacio Checa y Barba, metropolitan of Quito, on the throne and in all pontifical vestments. Together with the president of Ecuador, they were the first in the world to devote their country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His death is the last documented case of the poisoning of a bishop during the liturgy. It happened during the Mass of the Presanctified celebrated on Good Friday, March 30, 1877 in the local cathedral. Having consumed the strychnine-poisoned wine, the archbishop died as soon as he returned to his palace. He was 47 years old.
